UMU -handmade by Japanese artisans-

The UMU series of earrings is filled with the thoughts of the designer and the engraver.

The UMU collection is handcrafted one by one by engravers with the theme of simple = beautiful.

These items are full of particularities that cannot be achieved by manufacturers, and the warm and beautiful curves of the handmade items lead to a feminine and elegant impression.

This time, we asked the designer about passion for the product.

-What do you consider when making mimi33 products?

At mimi33, a store specializing in earrings and pierced earrings, most of our items are metal allergy friendly! Stainless steel is easy to wear, even for people with allergies and gold is plated with K18, while silver is coated with resin to make it less likely to cause allergic reactions.

-It's safe to use if it's allergy-friendly.

Yes, it is! But stainless steel is hard and difficult to work with...and most of the stainless steel accessories on the market are large and rather cool. At mimi33, we worked with the engraver at our head office studio to create a prototype of a delicate design that would change this concept.

-Because of its distinctive shape, it looks delicate but also impressive.

The shape is unique, because the surface of the parts is hand-hammered with an uneven texture. If you look closely at the twisted design, you can see that only one side has this texture, and by combining it with the shiny side, it creates a balance and contrast that makes the three-dimensional effect stand out and look beautiful.

-There is a little bit of texture in the other pieces as well.

For the hoop earrings, I hit them flat to give them texture, and for the larger ones, I put them in the side view, and conversely, for the smaller ones, I put them in the front to give them a small but strong presence. Since they are not three-dimensional objects, I think about how much of the design I can create on a flat surface.

The designs are delicate and simple, but they are the result of discussions with the engraver.
For example, the twisted American earrings. We went through a lot of trial and error to create a more beautiful and flexible curve. The earrings with a series of rings were not originally designed this way, but the engraver made a suggestion for the post and we ended up with this shape.
It is only in the head office studio that we can work with the metal engraver to create the earrings.

This series makes you want to wear them every day. The material, comfort, and design are simple but have a strong presence.

Why don't you put on UMU accessories, filled with the thoughts of the designer and engraver, one of your favorites?

Gloss Epoxy

Gloss Epoxy accessories created by the world's only technology.

Clear Color Hoop Earrings[S]

The Gloss Epoxy series is popular for mimi33's accessories. These accessories feature a delicate metal frame and glossy surface. They are produced by artisans at a factory that has the world's only processing technology that involves pouring epoxy resin inside the metal frame and then processing the bending.

This spacious place is the Gloss Epoxy factory. Gloss Epoxy is made with a special adhesive called epoxy resin. There are so many types of epoxy resin that not only can it be used to create a wide variety of colors, but it can also be used to create a variety of expressions such as transparent, translucent, opaque, and marbled.
However, not all epoxy resins can be used in products. If the wrong type is used, the plump texture and luster of the surface cannot be achieved, or it may crack or come off the frame. A lot of time and processes are required for research to find the right epoxy resin for the product from among the many available ones. We spoke to the Gloss Epoxy factory, which has been lovingly researching this epoxy resin for over 40 years.

-Why did you decide to put epoxy resin in the frame?

The first step was to apply epoxy resin to the metal base. But then a miracle happened! One day I accidentally spilled epoxy on the floor. But the next day the spilled epoxy was so good that I got the idea from there. The metal frame is almost the same as the engraving technique, but it took me about five years to formulate the technique to fit the frame.

-What is the most important thing in your research?

The most important thing in research is to have high curiosity and enthusiasm, and to never give up. Our motivation is to bring our research to fruition and surprise and delight our customers with new technology. We are very happy when we get extra orders from stores or hear that we sold a lot of products. We are very happy when we receive homework (production requests) from mimi33. Because when I complete a product, I'm more than happy to hear people say "cute" and see their surprised faces. That's why I'm still researching new techniques.
mimi33's spoon shaped earrings use a special technique that we have been working on since we made a sample of this technique five years ago, and recently we have been able to make it into a product. Even if you can create a sample, it is actually important to start from there. We need to get the shape right before we can mass-produce it, and only then will it be ready for production.

The Grosse Epoxy factory pursues new items and proposes them using advanced technology. During the interview, despite the background of many years of research, he never said backward-looking words like "it was hard work," but was always full of inquisitiveness, asking "what kind of things can we make?" and "I want to see the surprised faces of our customers," which gave me an opportunity to feel his pride as a processing craftsman.
